25 Juli 2006 | Thailand, Chiang Mai

After more than 3 hours delay we finally arrived at Chiang Mai airport (around 2.00am), an ancient city in the Northern part of Thailand. After our midnight adventures and a tiring trip Jellina and I decided to take it slow the first day. Went to the breakfast buffet right before it closed because those 5 minutes of extra sleep are always worth it. Afterwards we enjoyed a refreshing dive in the pool and some revitalizing fruit cocktails. The whole day passed by with not one bit of sunshine but Marieke can still manage to get a serious sun burn.
Chiang Mai is famous for its giant Night Market, so of course we had to go there and explore the atmosphere and the countless number of products. We were not the only ones, about 6 double decked giant busses from FOX Tours, Peter Langhout Reizen, GoGo Tours, Arke Reizen and so on had the same final destination. Yes all those tour operators are Dutch, yes 6 double decked busses were filled with Dutch people, yes it was terrible, yes we were ashamed to be Dutch and yes we pretended to be from some other country.
If you really wanna fit into the international crowd here you have to dress a bit hippie-ish. Back home they wear designer outfits but as soon as they enter Thailand they have to have dreadlocks and wear something like ‘fishermen’ trousers. We just think that this is really funny so we decided to mingle with them and buy those fish something trousers for 1 euro and a couple of cents.
The other group of people that you ran into in every country (so also here) are the British hooligans with their football shirts and red faces. We also wanted to be accepted by them but they are not hippie-ish at all so that was quite a challenge.
My face was red already so only the shirt problem had to be solved. In a hidden corner of the market we found a place with the most ugly football shirts ever! We both chose a shirt of the Thai national team and put our nicknames in shiny gold (to make it a bit hippie-ish) on the back.
The next day we went to some different sightseeing spots in our hippigan outfit. We were appreciated by all people (the hippies, the hooligans and the Thai because it was a shirt of the Thai team). With a little effort you can make everybody happy!
