1. Orange dust – dusty roads in combination with motorbikes or no aircon vehicles
2. Wining – in cities or villages, everywhere, with everyone
3. Rum – with sprite/coke or Wowetta style with Tang (powder + water), no ice
4. Motorbikes – every day to work, mud or dust, only minor accidents
5. Hammocks – to lime or to sleep, never wanna live without anymore
6. Cockroaches – in food, wardrobes, bathroom, small – big – enormous
7. Cassava – bread, farine, cassareep, kari name it they can make it
8. Banks – the one and only Guyanese lager
9. Sweat – every minute of every day
10. Havaianas – my only ‘shoes’
11. Taint – even I have a taint after 365 days of sun
12. Insufficient deodorant – never 24 hours resistance
13. Mud – serious mud after serious rainfall
14. Rastamen – mutual interest :)
15. Shoo – spray everyday, to keep the mosquitos far far away!
16. Salt soap – best to get stains out of clothes when hand washing with cold water
17. Foha – Brazilian very monotone music, especially popular in the regions
18. Fruta – one of Guyana’s famous sweet drinks in a can
19. Mosquito nets – not one night without
20. Bug spray – is there a brand that really works?
21. Water pumps – tanks empty, pumping water
22. Generators – bzzzzzzzzzzz, all day, every day, silence please
23. Chow Mien – Guyanese equivalent of noodles, just way more disgusting
24. ATVs – also known as quads, not suitable for 4 persons
25. Canoes – tranquil, a bit tippy though
26. Solar panels – my saviours in the night
27. Celine Dion – unbelievably popular in Guyana, even in music blasting cars
28. Enrique Iglesias – even the ‘cool’ guys like him
29. White gyal hollering – in case I forget I’m white, people remind me everyday
30. Minibuses – blasting music, hustling conductors, pimped up rides, crazy driving
31. Boats – 40 horsepower preferred, still amazed by beauty of the rivers/creeks
32. Guzzler – sweet drink but with 100% vitamin C
33. Tuna in a can – at least 4 times a week
34. Itch – not a day/night without
35. Cold showers – still not used to
36. Hand wash – dreaming about washing machines every time
37. Roast – bbq meat on a stick with hot sauce
38. Bad internet connection – sheer frustration
39. Toshaos – chief, don’t enter a village without permission
40. Milk powder – no fridge, no milk, no choice
41. Smelling yourself – iehh
42. Mint green – the only colour of paint in the Rupununi
43. Frogs – in sinks, toilets, tea pots, preferably like to jump when least expected
44. Ants – everywhere, within seconds, teeny tiny ones and massive ones
45. Bats – my steady but messy and noisy roommates
46. Needs Assessments – filled most of my year but are done now
47. Backpack – basically my 2nd house, or actually maybe my 1st
48. Flashlights – number 1 on my packing lists
49. Intraserve – the big orange bus that took me to GT in 15 – 30 hrs
50. Latrines – stinky, dirty but got over it
51. Fly – combined with football, my favourite local drink, made from sweet potato
52. Kari – my least favourite local drink, made from cassava
53. Male attention – every second, everywhere, Amerindian, Afro-Guyanese, East-Indian
54. VSO – not enough words to express
55. Gossip – daily activity number 1 in the villages, especially about strange white people
56. Chutney – not digging it so much
57. NRDDB – my work place in the Roop
58. Skinny dogs with flies – throughout Guyana on every corner of the street, sad little creatures
59. Donkeys – loud, useless creatures
60. Fear of snakes – cannot be cured
61. Travel travel travel – bus, truck, boat, ATV, plane, canoe, walk, motorbike, minibus
62. Bumpy roads – completely used to, totally forgot about highways
63. Gravel – hurts when falling with motorbike
64. Wowetta – ‘my’ village
65. Georgetown – a break and closest to some sort of civilization
66. Trini Carnival – good memories, again next year?
67. Short visit home – too short, great to see everyone again, made me miss home more
68. Rugby – drinking with and supporting the national team, friends
69. Cricket – very popular sport, still don’t understand the rules
70. Energy drinks – plenty, all disgusting and sweet
71. Loud music – even in remote places
72. Zita’s meals – my neighbour taking care of me
73. Bakes – preferable dry bakes for breakfast. Mixed with garlic and herbs great idea
74. Pepper sauce – not a meal without
75. Pepper pot – my favourite Guyanese meal, Amerindian style pepper pot that is, with fish
76. Kaboras – stinging little flies, killers
77. Books – never so many in my life
78. Movies – my saviour on dark and lonely nights
79. Sergio – fellow vol, friend and buddy
80. Nick – fellow vol, friend and crazy man
81. Heather – my Wowetta roomie who left me
82. Drunks – limits, nehh, every time if the day
83. Fetching well water – whenever the water pump decides to stop working
84. Carib – my favourite Caribbean beer
85. Makushi – still don’t know a word
86. Just now – still slow, got into the rhythm though
87. Vybz Kartel – very popular in Guyana, promoting Clarks
88. Movado – I’m so special, so special, so special
89. Machel Montano – best concert ever, love it love it
90. Kes – beautiful man, beautiful voice
91. Yupukari – favourite village in the Roop
92. Lethem – loading bags of groceries
93. Facebook – one of the best tools to stay in contact with my friends all over the world
94. Trainings – finally started
95. Jah Cure – 2010 Christmas concert
96. Luke warm drinks – always in Wowetta
97. No fridge – nothing can be kept, adjusted fairly well
98. Cooking experiments – with limited ingredients I can still be creative
99. Phone numbers – is what the men are giving me and they want to collect mine
100. Small planes – amazing but scary especially the smaller than 12 seats ones
101. Sun lotion – need it less and less
102. Diary – still manage to write about 10 lines a day
103. Soca – just can’t stop dancing
104. Dancehall – mixed with soca, long long nights
105. Upper Mazaruni – region 7, one of the working areas
106. Moruca – region 1, beautiful, water everywhere. Going to spend more time coming year
107. Tourism – I’m called the expert
108. Blogging – Not as much as I should
109. Bars – in front of every window
110. Fish shop – fish and (plantain) chips go very well with Banks
111. Snackette – small shop with snacks, drinks, beer, sweets
112. Dakota bar – One of the two hangout spots in the Roop
113. Jerry’s – preferably late in the night, early in the morning
114. Oasis – hang out in the Roop and milkshakes and panini’s in GT
115. Waiting – part of every day life
116. Savannah – all over the Roop
117. Savannah View – favourite place in Moruca, nice breeze and nice view
118. Mojo’s – let’s go clubbing
119. Lane Avenue – hanging out with my ‘Ghetto’ friends
120. Robbstreet – favourite place to stay in GT, very central
121. Plantain chips – really good substitute for potatoes
122. Pool – never played it so much, getting better after a few drinks, always with Moto Moto
123. Pegasus – for a plunge in the pool
124. Coconut water – drinking from the coconut, divine
125. Benab – simple structure, ideal for slinging up a hammock
126. Breeze – luckily Guyana always has a breeze otherwise it would be unbearable
127. High wine – never drink it pure, that will be your last drink
128. Ivanov vodka – cheapest vodka ever
129. Banko wine – has nothing to do with wine, sweet sweet sweet
130. Black water – like tea, especially in region 1 and GT creeks
131. Pirai – kill and attack
132. Lukonani – yummie fish, especially fresh and fried
133. Jaguar – only heard one and saw a glimpse of it
134. Kanaima – mysterious creature that is being blamed for everything that is bad
135. Concerts – especially Caribbean artists, always a nice night out
136. Hair up – all the time, down is so hot
137. Nigel’s – best supermarket in GT, has cheese, pita bread and liver sausage
138. Digicel – Guyana’s bigger, better network
139. Three times – to put emphasis on something a word is repeated 3 times
140. Accustomed – Guyanese for used to: I is accustomed to…
141. Sheer – Guyanese for only: it is sheer farine we eatin
142. Fetch – Guyanese for getting something: fetchin water from the well
143. Plenty – Guyanese for many: rain fallin plenty plenty plenty
144. Vex – Guyanese for angry: I is vex with she
145. Bathing – the word showering is not known
146. Lemongrass – beautiful tea
147. Farine – hard grains from cassava, only like it soaked
148. Power cuts – in GT, Lethem or Moruca, not so convenient
149. Good day – don’t you dare greeting someone with hello, it should be good…
150. Bathing wear – shorts on top, bikinis are not invented as yet
151. Chine – (pronounce chini) chine food, chine clothes, chine shops, chine invasion
152. Polyester clothing – chine again and totally not practical in this weather
153. Plastic shoes – guess… chine, bad quality but still quite expensive
154. Mining – in many areas of the country, mainly gold and diamonds
155. Porknockers - miners
156. Guinness – Every Guyanese man drinks Guinness
157. Buddy – Every Guyanese guy ends his sentence with buddy
158. Liming – Gotten very good at this activity
159. Annie bus – Ride to Lethem, or not…
160. Dog bite – while on the motorbike. After months still scar
161. Fuel – sometimes hard to find, without it no transport, water or generator
162. Cooking gas – in big bottles
163. Fresh lime juice – lovely in this heat
164. Fires – to burn garbage or burn the savannah
165. Football – every afternoon at the ball field in front of my house, watching that is
166. Shutters – no windows but glass shutters, really easy to break in
167. Walls not up to the ceiling – privacy is a word that Guyana has never heard of
168. Tailor – lovely dress maker in GT
169. Whini tree – in front of my house, allergic to the fruit
170. Food boxes – Guyanese love food, not such a good idea with no waste management
171. Allright – everything is not okay, it’s allright
172. Ah hah – saying that you understand/agree
173. Knots – I’m an expert in tying my hammock
174. Coloured toe nails – no matter where I am, even in the middle of the bush
175. Skype – best invention since the telephone
176. EARS – our project, Empowering Amerindians in Achieving their Rights
177. Peace Corps – fellow volunteers
178. Bucket shower – when we run out of water, especially hard to wash my hair

I was planning to do 365, after 178 I’m out of inspiration and I noticed that it’s getting pretty long. Well, I guess you got the idea anyway. 365 days in Guyana, 365 days to go.

    Wow, I think 178 things is already a lot!!! Good for you. Missing you though so another 365 days is quite a bit. But I sure do hope that you are having a blast and that you feel well all the time. Here we do have a horrible summer (or should I say autumn)?! so I am still quite jealous. But who knows if I manage to save a bit of money (like that is going to happen :P) I can visit you and be 521: The day Barbie arrives to have a blast with Red Barbarian :)

    That would make my year!
