21 November 2007 | Singapore, Singapore
It was a bit tiring all that jumbo jet jumping but a good old hotel bed helps a lot.
It is hard to imagine what Singapore is like. I had the feeling that I escaped Asia in only a 2,5 hour flight. It is so extremely tidy and modern. A huge shopping mall can be found on every street corner. The people of Singapore are a huge melting pot of, Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western cultures. That is why every announcement and sign is made in at least 4 different languages. However within the city most cultures have their own special spot like China Town or Little India. We have visited Little India and indeed you have the feeling that you have crossed borders. A lot of tailors and gold shops with necklaces sooo big that BA (Bosco) Baracus would be jealous.
The first thing that popped up in my head when thinking about Singapore was: No gum spitting on the floor or you will get a huge fine or maybe even put in jail. In reality it appeared to be like that and worse:
• No littering
• No eating and drinking in malls or metro’s
• No pets
• No durians (stinking Asian fruits)
• No sitting where you suppose to stand and the other way around
• No smoking
• Etc. Etc.
We filled our days with window shopping (so many incredible expensive shops that lie far beyond our budgets), visiting all kinds of nice restaurants, visiting every Starbucks in town, visiting the Thai embassy for visa and stuff and even got the chance to see the President. We ran in to him by accident. We had to take a look at the money first to see which of the men in suit actually the president was.
Unfortunately the visa applying did not went as smooth as we had hoped for so we had to stay an extra night, so I spend my b-day in Singapore especially at the embassy and airport. But we are planning to have a little party later this week.
