Camping is just not my thing

I’m absolutely positive now, camping is just not my thing. Eventhough having a camper is supposed to be luxurious camping, I don’t agree! To maneuver the stuff of 4 people plus all kinds of materials for work is just impossible. The whole day we are moving mess around. On top of that we have to deal with, sand everywhere, cold showers, no toilet paper, cold nights, walking great distances before you reach the toilet whenever I have to go to the toilet again at night, wet trousers because one could never keep them dry when changing in the (always too small) showers. A couple of days ago I started to get sick, with all of us in one small space, now everyone is coughing and sneezing. I know I know I shouldn’t complain I’ve gone through much worse situations in Mongolia, but I seem to forget all the bad parts and remember only the good parts. Therefore in a couple of days when I will be back in my apartment in Amsterdam I will never think about all this again and just remember the good parts :)

Weather wise we are also going through quite an ordeal. We are breaking one record after another. In Pretoria we have had the coldest night in 20 years (-8C) and in Durban we have had a day with rain which should have been spread over at least a month. Luckily we’ve also had sunshine. Especially on the day of our second event: the Township Experience in Umlazi (a township in Durban). It was a great event, with a police escort, a whole bunch of screaming high school kids to welcome us, lots of press (also NOS), a soccer clinic with Robbert Schilder (NAC) and Shorty, fanatic soccer games and the day ended with a braai in the middle of the township.

Now we are road tripping from Durban to Capetown. Quite a distance so we have to stay the night in 2 different places (3 days of driving in total). The first day we stopped in Jikeleza with a camp site right next to the beach, awesome! It was beautiful with huge waves, the water wasn’t too cold so I couldn’t resist, I took a swim. Imagine in the middle of winter, unfortunately it didn’t really help me getting rid of my cold. But I only had one shot, one opportunity so I took it!

A report of my last few awesome days will follow soon!

    Hoi kind,
